Story Behind the Image

"This was Jimi’s last English performance before he ‘passed on’ a month later.
It was also the end of the Isle of Wight Festival until it was reinstated many years later and is now as popular as the Glastonbury Festival.
The three day event was choc a block full of great acts and Jimi was topping the bill on the last night.
Jimi had just opened the Electric Ladyland Studios in New York and flew back for this show. He did seem to be not at ease at the beginning of the set and disappeared behind the stack of speakers, a small cloud of smoke arose from behind the speaker and Jimi emerged, smiled and got ‘In gear’ for a great show.
A roadie had given Jimi a puff of a ‘magic cigarette’." - Barrie Wentzell
